We have been on an Open Air Bus Tour, Boat Trip down the Dnieper River, eaten at a fabulous Chinese Restaurant; BAO Restaurant Kiev and, of course, found a fancy mall.
Checking out Gulliver Mall - the theme is Gulliver's Travels
The Bus Tour - so much history and culture to be learned from this city and its people.
Statue of Bohdan Khmelnytsky
He led an uprising against the Commonwealth and its magnates (1648–1654) that resulted in the creation of a state led by the Cossacks of Ukraine. It is located in Sophia Square and one of the cities oldest sculptural monuments and considered one of many symbols of the city.
Lyadsky Gate
The gate is located in the area of the modern Independence Square. At the top is a sculpture of Archangel Michael made by Ukrainian Sculptor, Anatoliy Kushcha
Also sculpted by Anatoliy Kushcha, the model for the woman was his daughter.
Awwww....DADS!!! :)
Taras Schevchenko University (former President of Ukraine)
St. Nicholas Cathedral
Second Roman Catholic Cathedral built in Kiev. It doubles as the National House of Organ and Chamber Music.
We're almost to the end ....
The Boat tour gave us an opportunity to see the city from the river. The pictures are not so good...sorry.
Left: The Motherland Monument
She is made entirely of stainless steel and with her base stands taller than the statue of liberty (or so we were told). She is the top of the entrance to the Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II
Top: Pechersk Lavra
also know as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves. This is the centre of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe and along with Saint Sophia Sophia Cathedral (see Bodhan above) is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is also considered one of the first locations of education in Europe and the place that the school I am teaching at is named after!!!
Bottom: Holomodor Monument
A memorial and museum dedicated to the holomodor (forced famine) victims.
And finally, believe it or not, there are several beaches on the banks of the river. Some on islands in the centre and others at various spots from one end to the other. There is also a very long pedestrian bridge that crosses the river AND people bungie jump off it.
